It’s mid September and apples are in season! So what better to make than an apple cake!
Pita is the Greek word for pies and cakes, and they can be both savory or sweet. So milopita means apple cake.
This cake is super moist and very delicious! You will love it. It’s like an apple flavored coffee cake.

True to many Greek cakes, it uses olive oil and Greek yogurt. I had Granny Smith apples, peeled and grated them so that I would have small pieces throughout the cake. Honey crisp, Pink Ladies, and Braeburn apples are also wonderful varieties for baking. You can even mix them for more complex flavor.

You can also thinly slice a third apple to decorate the top. Finally before baking, I topped it with a mixture of ground walnuts, sugar and cinnamon & it takes the cake to another level of heavily! You can of course skip the garnish & a dusting of powdered sugar will suffice.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup olive oil
3/4 cup Greek yogurt
2 grated peeled apples
Juice & zest of 1 lemon
3/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom
1 tbsp vanilla paste or extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1 shot brandy
For the Optional Garnish:
1 apple
1/2 cup ground walnuts
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Directions:
Grate the apples & mix them with the lemon zest and juice. Set aside.
Mix the eggs & sugar till fluffy. Add the olive oil and yogurt and whisk together. Add in the vanilla paste, cinnamon, cardamom, & brandy.
In a separate bowl mix together the flour, baking powder, & salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet.
The stir in the grated apples, walnuts, & raisins.

For the garnish, thinly slice the apple and arrange in whatever design you like.
Mix the walnuts, cinnamon, & sugar. With a spoon, sprinkle that in the spaces between the apples.
Bake at 325 F for 1 hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let it cool to room temperature. Garnish it with powdered sugar if you like. Or leave it plain.
